Elementary School Level

 

The Wizard of Oz

By: L Frank Baum

 

Introduction:

As a tornado tears through Kansas a girl named Dorothy and her dog named Toto to get taken away along with their house to the land of Oz. Once they arrive in the land of Oz they follow the yellow brick road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard. On the way to meet the Wizard, Dorothy and Toto meet a Scarecrow that needs a brain, a Tin Man missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage. Once they all arrive to meet the Wizard, they are asked to bring the Wizard the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West to get the Wizard to help. 

 

Discussion Questions:

1) What is the difference between the good fairy and the bad witch?

2) What happens to the bad witch and what does the good fairy tell Dorothy to do? 

3) What kind of storm occurs in Dorothy's hometown?  

 

In-Class Activities:

Once the class reads the book, students will have their own choice on which character they will like to create. Once students have picked the character they will receive a pieces of construction paper based on their pick and the students will make their character come to life. After the craft is made students will gather around and watch the Wizard of oz movie and tell their favorite part that they liked the most.

 

 

The Polar Express

Introduction:

A young boy on Christmas Eve who wakes up to the sound of a magical train and boards the train with no idea where the train is headed, only to find out that the train is heading to the North Pole. He does not believe in Santa Claus until he meets him in person and is given the first gift of Christmas. Throughout the book, he finds himself and realizes that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.

 

Discussion Questions:

1) Where did the children go on their train ride?

2) What gift did Santa give to the little boy? 

3) How do you think the missing present ended back up under the little boy's Christmas tree? 

 

In-Class Activities:

Students will have a note sent home letting parents know that the next day is PAJAMA DAY!!  Students will sit down and read the polar express book, once students are finished with the book they will go back to their seats and create their own train out of graham crackers, icing, and red and green candies.  Students will create their trains on a paper plate and have hot coco (which will be warm, so the students don’t get burnt). After students are finished with the activities they will watch the movie “Polar Express”. Students will tell what they liked about the movie and they will have a bell at the end to see if they believe in Santa.

 

Interactive Activity:

 After the students read the book, for homework that night they are to complete a few activities from http://polarexpress.com/games-fun/. Make sure you print out the activities that you choose and complete them. Bring them to class for show and tell, but also for a homework grade. If you do not have internet access or a printer at home, please tell the teacher so other arrangements can be made.   

 

 

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly

Introduction: 

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly, a spider, a bird, a cat, a dog, a goat, a cow, and a horse. Since she swallowed so many animals she’s dead, of course.

 

Discussion Questions:

1) Why would an old lady swallow so many animals?

2) Why do you think she chose those animals to eat (Fly, Bird, Spider)? 

3) No matter how hungry you were, would you eat animals? 

 

In-Class Activities:

Students will come in and sit down ready for the book. Once the book is finished students will go back to their seats to begin the activity. Students will have a paper bag, an old lady, farm animals and things from the book, glue and crayons. Students will color their old lady along with the animals and items from the book. Once students are finished coloring they will glue the only woman’s head and body onto the paper bag where they then will have the mouth cut out so that they can place the animals into the old lady.

 

 

 

Middle School Level

 

Divergent

Introduction: 

In a more future Chicago, society is divided into five factions Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, Candor and Amity. These factions are decided at birth and you are able to change your faction when you reach the age of sixteen. Tris, on the other hand, changed her faction to dauntless and turns out she is known as divergent. Divergent is a mixture of all the factions and is the rarest of them all. As the story continues on, she battles with people in the different factions trying to kill divergent.

 

Discussion Questions:

1) What do the children have to do when they turn 16 years old?

2) Where is Beatrice from?

3) What is the ceremony called where each character has to choose whether to stay or leave? 

 

In-Class Activities:

This book will need to be read on their own as well. Students then will be assigned to pick their favorite character from the book and they will have to write a 2-3-page paper. They need to describe their favorite character and why, what they like and what they don’t like, and finally what would they change or what they would add to their character and why.

 

 

The Bridge to Terabithia

Introduction: 

Jess and Leslie find it hard to fit in at a school where they are bullied because they are different. Jess likes to draw and is bullied for it and Leslie is bullied for the way she dresses. The two of them find this place in the woods and name it Terabithia. The only way to get to Terabithia is to swing across the creek on a rope swing. While they are there they use their imagination to be able to live in a world where they are able to forget all of their problems and truly be themselves.

 

Discussion Questions:

1) Who beats Jesse and in what kind of activity is it?

2) Who is Jesse's crush?

3) How did Leslie die?

 

In-Class Activities:

Students will be read the Book Bridge to Terabithia in class with the teacher. Throughout this reading students will be quizzed on what was previously read in class, so students need to pay attention. Once the book is complete students will write a one to two-page paper describing their magical place. Students need to be very descriptive with this assignment.

 

 

High School Level

 

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Introduction:

 Jake’s grandfather left behind clues to a mystery that includes different worlds and times, when he had passed. He follows this mystery to see if what his grandfather was telling him was true. Little does he know, that it is. He finds a magical place known as Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children. Children that go to this school have special powers and very dangerous enemies. Jake, however, had no idea he was a peculiar child until his special peculiarity is the only thing that can save Miss Peregrine and the children.

 

Discussion Questions:

1) Who left Jake with clues to solve the mystery? 

2) Who can save Jake's new friends?

3) Who owns the house for peculiar children? 

 

In-Class Activities:

Students will read the book on their own and they also will be tested on this book. Students will write a 3-4 page about peculiarity they would want to have. Students need to be very descriptive and they need to make sure that they grab the readers attention when they are writing this paper.
