Rough Draft Workshops: creating lessons and meeting goals

Quizzes

ANNOTATED EXAMPLES:

Examples of questions from the "Introduction" to Orenstein's Red Riding Hood Uncloaked:

MATCHING:

  • Match the character with the symbolic meaning MOST OFTEN associated with it in fairy tales between 1600 and 1950:
  1. Character represents evil: D
  2. Character represents maternal wisdom: B
  3. Character represents masculine or paternal strength: C
  4. Character represents innocence (or sexual curiosity): A

A. Red Riding Hood

B. Grandma

C. Wood Cutter (or Huntsman)

D. Wolf

Matching questions require critical thinking because each right answer is dependent upon the others. Asking questions about patterns that are usually but not always true also requires students to think critically because they must consider something that may occur across a wide range of examples. Definitions or author-text matching are also good subjects for matching questions.

MULTIPLE CHOICE:

1.How long has the story of Little Red Riding Hood been passed down for?

     a. a few years

     b. almost 50 years

     c. over a century

     d. none of the above

2.  Orenstein describes how this fairytale represents the relationship between:

     a. a man and a woman

     b. a brother and sister

     c. how good can triumph over evil

     d. both a and c

These are great example of a multiple choice question because they require more critical thinking than multiple choice questions that simply include the right answer among other wrong answers. Perhaps TWO choices are correct, or NONE of the choices. However, the questions are not vague and they have a definite answer in the presentation.

FILL-IN-THE-BLANK and TRUE/FALSE

Fill-in-the-blank should be reserved for important terms, definition, or (possibly) important dates.

The Grimm's FIRST edition of Kinder-und-Hausmarchen was published in _____. (ANSWER:1812) This is an important date and requires critical thinking because there are so many editions of the Grimm's collection (1812 - 1857).

The Grimm's FIRST edition of Kinder-und-Hausmärchen was published in 1815. (ANSWER: FALSE - The Grimm's first version specifically edited for a CHILD audience was published in 1815 after parents complained about the content of the 1812 edition. They had not thought CHILDREN would be the audience for their collection, but when they realized they could market this to them, they began revising the tales. This distinction (1812 vs. 1815) requires students to think critically before answering.

Identify two ways that Charles Perrault's Histoires ou contes du temps passé (1697) were associated with female storytellers:

Answer: Illustrations of female story tellers and the subtitle: Tales of Mother Goose (or Les Contes de ma Mère l'Oye) connected Perrault's work with women's oral tradition.

Short answer questions always require critical thinking. They should have a concrete, specific answer, and should be able to be expressed in a sentence or less (there is a limited number of words allowed on the Blackboard app). These questions should reference a main idea or central point from the presentation, something that is important for students to take away so that they can use it in their own work in the class.

Consider using FREE software like POLL EVERYWHERE or SURVEY PLANET.

Can quizzes be used as fun group activities?

  • Appeal to different modes of learning/knowing?

What does a good rubric need?

What is Your Goal for Reading in Your Classroom

Why is reading important? What overarching concept about reading do you want your students to gain in your class?
