    • What was the most difficult thing you encountered in writing the paper? How could you help students when they encounter those issues?
  • Lost time on poetry unit, so the Poetry Group Presentations  have been modified (simplified).

Discussion Questions:

  • How does reading this book out loud differ from other reading experiences?
  • How does this text fit the criteria for a good read-aloud poetry book (according to ECL). Could you make a rubric/checklist to use to evaluate other books and whether or not they should be read aloud?
  • How can this activity help resistant readers?

Activity:

Discussion questions for students:

How did using these big words work in the poem. If we replaced the word "ca·coph·o·nous" with loud, would it be as effective? They mean the same thing, but would the message of the poem change because the feel and lyricism of the language changes?

  1. Use one of the words here in a sentence about dragons or other magical creatures.
  2. Write a four-line poem about your magical creature using a synonym of the word.

This activity integrates (the rigidity of) vocabulary building with the art and creativity of poetry. It also helps students think about the lyrical nature of words in poetry.

Poetry and Word Art

How does recent Caldecott winning artist Pamela Zagarenski use image and text to create a message?

Group Activity:

How does the magnetic poetry allow students to participate in the visual art of words?

Create an activity on the newsprint sheets (and model it) that allows students to engage in word art and poetry. Should students use images or colored pens (crayons...) or should they focus on the art of words alone?

Writing and Rhyming

Connecting reading, writing and creativity is an essential skill. Although many modern poets resist tropes such as end rhyme, it's a valuable skill for students.

Group Work:

  • Create a rhyming activity for ES, MS, and HS students using a Shel Silverstein poem.
    • Model the activity on the sheets of paper.
  • What different skills would you want them to master at different levels?

Carver: A Life in Poems

Poetry is not just the for lymericks and Hallmark cards, poetry is the genre of the great epics of our world: it conveys the essence of the human experience! Carver: A Life in Poems is a great way to help students experience the genre of poetry in a new way!

Carver: A Life in Poems by Marilyn Nelson

George Washington Carver (1864-1943) earned the respect of both blacks and whites in the rural South by freeing the Southern economy from the environmental ravages of cotton with his innovative agricultural methods, and went on to win the respect of the nation and the world as one of the great inventors of the early Twentieth Century. In a mixture of free-verse and rhymed, metrical verse, Nelson traces the life of this brilliant humanitarian, artist and scientist, beginning with his birth in Diamond Grove, Missouri and ending with his death in Tuskegee, Alabama.

Born a slave, Carver and his brother, Jim, were reared by the childless white couple who had owned their mother. With the encouragement of his adoptive parents, Carver left home at age ten in order to find schools which would accept a black student. He spent much of his youth traveling from town to town in pursuit of an education.

In this celebration of Carver's life, Nelson focuses on his character, his work, his faith, his inventions, his commitment to the economic development of his people and of the American South, and his contributions to the development of sustainable agriculture.

Group Work:

Create class activities to bring Carver to life for young readers. You can use activities we've already done or activities in your book (or invent something new).
