For this project, students will analyze the works of a single award-winning illustrator across 3-5 books (see the list of awards in ECL). This paper will have a thesis supported by a close reading of images and exploration of how they work. Use the chapter on ILLUSTRATIONS (Ch. 4) in ECL for terminology and criteria in evaluations (you may cite it in the paper).
Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to understand the importance of visual literacy in children's and YA critical literacy. Illustrations are usually the first "texts" that young readers understand and interpret.
Tasks
For this project, students will analyze the works of a single award-winning illustrator across 3-5 books (see the list of awards in ECL):
Select a single award-winning illustrator and 3-5 books.
Write a 3-5 page analysis.
Create an interactive assignment for (future) students using illustrations. Include visual art and writing in assignment.
Include Works Cited (or Bibliography).
This analysis should be modeled on an EDUCATION PUBLICATION (meaning):
It should have a thesis (make an argument).
It should include images for the readers to reference (along with charts or tables or any other needed figures).
It should be accessible and BRIEF (and it should have a more conversational tone than scholarly articles).
It should have material that can be actively applied with young readers (in a setting of your choice).
This isn't an MLA-style research paper with a lot of theory (though sources should be cited).
Include a BRIEF (1-2 minute) video introducing your main point and an illustration and activity that you can share with the class for a discussion board.
Criteria:
For this project, students will analyze the works of a single award-winning illustrator across 3-5 books (see the list of awards in ECL).
Write a 3-5 page analysis. This analysis should include:
A thesis supported by a close reading of images and exploration of how they work.
Address how wonder is generated through illustration.
Address how diversity is illustrated in the books (or note).
A description of how this could be used in the future (i.e. in a class, library, or Master Class ONLN).
Create an interactive assignment for (future) students using illustrations. Include visual art and writing in assignment.
Assignment should teach close reading of images and critical literacy skills.
CREATE A PAGE AND RECORDING WHERE YOU PRESENT THE MAIN POINTS OF YOUR PAPER.
(100 points total)
This assignment fulfills learning objectives 1, 2, 3, & 4
Illustration Analysis Example.pdf - This essay is actually part of a larger project about fairy tales and Imperialism, but this is how you write about IMAGES without retelling the story they illustrate. The essay looks at the political, social, and ethical implications of Harry Clarke's fairy-tale illustrations from the 1910s.
